What Should You Look for When Choosing the Best Aesthetic Clinic in Singapore?

Choosing an aesthetic clinic is not quite the same as choosing a facial salon or a beauty treatment.

Aesthetic treatments are medical procedures. Whether you are considering botulinum toxin, dermal fillers, lasers, skin tightening treatments or other injectables, the person assessing your face and recommending your treatment plan matters just as much as the treatment itself.

With so many aesthetic clinics in Singapore offering similar treatments, it can be difficult to know what separates one clinic from another. Attractive before-and-after photographs, attractive promotions and a long list of available treatments can certainly catch your attention — but they do not necessarily tell you whether a clinic is right for you.

So, what should you actually look for when choosing an aesthetic clinic?

Here are some of the things we believe patients should consider.

1. Look at the doctor, not just the treatment menu

One of the most important questions to ask is: Who will actually be treating me?

A clinic may offer an impressive list of procedures, but aesthetic medicine is highly dependent on the skill, judgement and experience of the individual doctor.

This is particularly important for injectables. Fillers and botulinum toxin are not simply about knowing where to place an injection. A good treatment requires an understanding of facial anatomy, proportions, movement, ageing patterns and how different structures interact with one another.

It is also worth looking beyond the number of years a doctor has been practising. Ask whether the doctor continues to learn, train and develop their skills within the field.

Two doctors, complementary areas of expertise

At Dr Felix Li Medical Aesthetics Clinic, both Dr Felix Li and Dr Jessica Chua have a strong focus on medical aesthetics and ongoing professional education.

Dr Felix has a particular focus on facial injectables and non-surgical facial rejuvenation. He is an International Faculty member of the Allergan Medical Institute (AMI) and has taught aesthetic doctors internationally across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. He is also involved in physician education as a Global Product Master for Allergan Aesthetics.

In other words, Dr Felix is not only an aesthetic doctor who performs these treatments — he also teaches other doctors how to perform them.

Dr Jessica’s approach is complemented by her own ongoing advanced training in aesthetic medicine. She is also part of the Allergan Medical Institute Top Leaders Programme, a selective physician development programme for doctors progressing towards faculty and trainer roles within AMI. She has additionally undertaken specialised training in facial ultrasound, developing expertise in using ultrasound to assess facial tissues and previous injectable treatments.

Her ultrasound training is particularly valuable when assessing patients with previous filler or possible filler-related complications. Rather than relying only on what can be seen or felt from the outside, ultrasound can help provide a more detailed understanding of what is beneath the skin — allowing treatment decisions to be made with greater precision when appropriate.

Dr Felix and Dr Jessica therefore bring different but complementary areas of expertise to the clinic. Both continue to develop their knowledge and skills within the field, while approaching each patient as an individual rather than applying a one-size-fits-all treatment plan.

When choosing your aesthetic doctor, consider not only how long they have been practising, but also whether they are actively involved in ongoing education, advanced training and the wider aesthetic medical community.

2. Look for someone who understands your face — rather than someone who simply treats individual problems

A face is not a collection of separate areas.

Treating the forehead, cheeks, lips, chin or jawline in isolation can sometimes produce a technically successful result that does not look harmonious as a whole.

This is particularly relevant as we age. Changes in facial volume, skin quality, muscle activity and structural support occur together. Sometimes the area that appears to be the problem is not necessarily where the underlying issue begins.

For example, someone may come in because they feel that their nasolabial folds are becoming deeper. Simply filling the fold may not always be the most appropriate solution. Depending on the individual, changes in the midface, cheek support, skin laxity or other aspects of facial structure may contribute to the appearance.

A good consultation should therefore involve looking at the face as a whole, understanding what has changed and determining which treatments, if any, are actually appropriate.

The goal should not be to treat every area that can be treated.

It should be to identify what will make the most meaningful difference for you.

3. Natural-looking results should be part of the philosophy — not just the marketing

One of the most common concerns we hear from patients is:

“I want to look better, but I don’t want people to know I’ve had something done.”

This is a very reasonable goal.

Good aesthetic treatment does not necessarily mean creating a dramatically different face. Often, the most satisfying results are subtle — you may look more rested, refreshed or balanced without looking obviously “done”.

At our clinic, this is central to how we approach aesthetic medicine.

Our philosophy is simple:

Beauty that everyone sees, but no one can tell is the standard that we hold ourselves to.

The aim is not to make every patient look the same, nor to reproduce a particular beauty trend. It is to understand the individual patient’s features and create an improvement that remains believable and appropriate for that person.

This is also why before-and-after photographs should be viewed thoughtfully. A result that looks beautiful on someone else may not necessarily be the right result for you.

4. A good clinic should be willing to tell you when you don’t need treatment

This is perhaps one of the most important — and most overlooked — qualities to look for.

A trustworthy aesthetic doctor should be comfortable saying:

“You don’t need this.”

There will always be another treatment that can theoretically be performed. But more treatment does not necessarily mean a better outcome.

An ethical consultation should consider whether a procedure is medically and aesthetically appropriate, what the realistic benefits are, what the risks are, and whether the expected improvement justifies undergoing treatment.

This also means being cautious of consultations that quickly turn into a shopping list of treatments.

If you come in concerned about one issue and leave feeling that you suddenly need five different procedures, it is reasonable to stop and ask why.

At the end of the day, your doctor should be recommending treatment based on what you need, rather than what can be sold.

5. Ask about complications — not just results

When researching an aesthetic clinic, it is natural to look at beautiful results.

But there is another question that is arguably even more important:

“What happens if something goes wrong?”

All medical procedures carry risks. Injectable treatments in particular require a detailed understanding of anatomy and appropriate management of potential complications.

This is one area where Dr Jessica’s additional training in facial ultrasound can be particularly valuable.

Some people live with incorrectly placed hyaluronic acid fillers that may have resulted in lumps, irregularities, swelling or unwanted fullness for years. Simply dissolving the product would provide significant relief to the patient, but many doctors would decline resolving complications created by other practitioners due to the lack of information as to where or what product was injected. Having expertise in facial ultrasound gives our doctors the confidence to treat complications effectively.

Why facial ultrasound can be useful

Ultrasound can help identify the location and characteristics of filler beneath the skin rather than relying solely on what can be seen or felt externally.

This can be particularly useful when assessing patients who have:

  • persistent filler lumps or nodules
  • unevenness or asymmetry following previous filler
  • unwanted fullness
  • filler that has migrated from its original treatment area
  • uncertainty about where previous filler has been placed

When appropriate, ultrasound can help guide a more targeted approach to managing these concerns.

This is particularly relevant for patients who have had treatments performed elsewhere and are looking for help correcting or dissolving unwanted filler.

The important point is that aesthetic medicine should not only be about creating good results. A good aesthetic doctor should also know how to recognise, prevent and manage complications.

6. Don’t be afraid to ask about the doctor’s training and credentials

Aesthetic medicine is constantly evolving.

New devices, injectables, techniques and approaches are introduced regularly. Doctors who practise in this field should therefore continue their education rather than relying solely on what they learned years ago.

When choosing a clinic, it is reasonable to ask:

  • Where did the doctor train?
  • What aesthetic procedures are they accredited to perform?
  • Do they regularly attend advanced courses?
  • Do they teach or lecture?
  • Are they involved in professional organisations or medical conferences?
  • Do they keep up with developments in facial anatomy and complication management?

For example, Dr Felix is actively involved in aesthetic medical education and has lectured internationally on facial rejuvenation and injectable treatments. His current academic and teaching involvement includes the Allergan Medical Institute, international conferences and physician education.

Dr Jessica’s background is complementary, with a focus on skin quality and women’s health, backed with a medical degree from NUS and a postgraduate diploma in Clinical Dermatology from Queen Mary University of London to support her practice in medical aesthetics.

We believe having doctors with different areas of experience and interest allows us to approach aesthetic concerns from more than one perspective.

7. Look for personalised treatment plans rather than standardised packages

Your face is unique.

Your skin, anatomy, facial proportions, ageing pattern, previous treatments and expectations are all different from someone else’s.

Therefore, a treatment plan that works beautifully for one patient may be completely inappropriate for another.

Be cautious of clinics where everyone seems to receive the same combination of treatments or where packages are presented before you have even had a proper assessment.

A consultation should begin with understanding you.

What bothers you?

What would you like to change?

What would you prefer not to change?

What have you had done previously?

And perhaps most importantly:

What does a successful result look like to you?

Only after understanding these things should treatment options be discussed.

8. Look beyond the treatment itself

A good aesthetic experience does not end when the injection, laser treatment or procedure is completed.

Ask about what happens afterwards.

Will you know what to expect during recovery?

Who should you contact if you have a concern?

Will the doctor review your results?

Are potential complications explained beforehand?

Good medical care includes appropriate follow-up and communication, not simply the procedure itself.

9. Be cautious of choosing a clinic based solely on price

Price is naturally an important consideration.

However, aesthetic treatment is one area where choosing purely based on the lowest price can be misleading.

The cost of a treatment reflects more than the product itself. It can include the doctor’s expertise, consultation, treatment planning, medical-grade equipment, quality of the products used, follow-up care and the ability to manage complications if they arise.

For injectables especially, the question should not simply be:

“How much does one syringe cost?”

A better question is:

“Who is assessing me, what are they recommending, why are they recommending it, and what is the plan if something doesn’t go as expected?”

10. Most importantly, choose a doctor you trust

Ultimately, choosing an aesthetic clinic is a very personal decision.

You should feel comfortable asking questions. You should feel that your concerns are being heard. You should understand why a treatment is being recommended and what you can realistically expect from it.

And you should never feel pressured to proceed.

At Dr Felix Li Medical Aesthetics Clinic, we believe aesthetic medicine should be based on medical judgement, precision and restraint.

We are not interested in making every patient look different.

We are interested in helping each patient look like the best, most refreshed version of themselves — while still looking like themselves.

That means knowing when to treat, knowing when not to treat, and having the expertise to manage the unexpected when it happens.

Because ultimately, the best aesthetic result is not necessarily the most noticeable one.

It is the one that looks right for you.

Choosing an aesthetic clinic in Singapore: a simple checklist

Before making your decision, ask yourself:

  • Is the treatment performed by a qualified and experienced doctor?
  • Does the doctor have genuine expertise in the treatments I am considering?
  • Does the doctor continue to train, learn or teach within the field?
  • Does the clinic prioritise natural and individualised results?
  • Am I being given a treatment plan, rather than being sold a package?
  • Does the doctor explain both benefits and risks?
  • Does the clinic have the expertise and equipment to assess and manage complications?
  • Do I feel comfortable saying no?
  • Do I trust the doctor to tell me when I don’t need a treatment?

If the answer to these questions is yes, you are likely looking beyond the marketing and considering the things that truly matter in aesthetic medicine.

At the end of the day, choosing an aesthetic clinic in Singapore is not simply about finding somewhere that can perform a particular treatment.

It is about finding a doctor whose judgement you trust with your face.
