In 2009, Ultherapy® was the first and only ultrasound energy based device US FDA approved for non-surgical skin tightening and lifting of neck, chin and brows. More than a decade on, the second generation Ultherapy® Prime has been introduced and continues to set the bar as the only US FDA approved device in the market for these clinical indications.

As the next generation of Ultherapy, Prime provides more consistent outcomes, better imaging for accuracy, and potentially improved comfort during treatment.

With the 4.5mm handpiece, Ultherapy® Prime lifts and tightens the SMAS – a continuous “sheath” under the skin encompassing the entire face and neck, that acts as a carrier for facial fat lying on it. As we age, our facial fat compartments move downwards and outwards, leading to broadening or “rectangularisation” of the face, loss of jawline definition, heavy jowls and deepening nasolabial folds. Lifting the SMAS pulls the overlying facial fat compartments inwards and upwards, improving the negative messages above and restoring the “triangle of youth”, leading to a slimmer, more V-shaped, and well defined facial contour.

With the 3.0mm handpiece, Ultherapy® Prime utilises microfocused ultrasound energy to generate a thermal effect under the skin, which jump starts the body’s natural process to produce new collagen. As a natural protein, collagen works to give skin its youthfulness by keeping it firm and toned. As we age, collagen breaks down, and the result is a loss of skin strength and elasticity. That’s where Ultherapy steps in.

Through real time visualisation and the SPT protocol, doctors can see the layers of tissue they are treating, which enables them to create thermal coagulation points at specific depths such as the SMAS where it delivers the most benefit, while bypassing the surface of the skin to minimise risks.
